Shakira – ‘Latin Queen’ Found Love From The World Cup

The Colombian singer has been in love with Gerard Pique, a Spanish professional soccer player since the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

On June 11, 2018 Pique shared on Instagram and Twitter a video of Shakira performing in London, England. The show was part of her world tour “El Dorado”. The Spanish midfielder wrote: “The best show I have ever seen”. In the comments, many fans expressed their admiration for the couple’s love.

Shakira and Pique first met in 2010 when Shakira just broke up with her longtime boyfriend Antonio de la Rua – son of former Argentine President Fernando de la Rua. However, the female singer has not released the information to the press at that time. According to many sources of news, it was Antonio de la Rua who deceived and hurt Shakira.

“Waka Waka” – the 2010 FIFA World Cup Song

Shakira was chosen to perform the theme song of the 2020 FIFA World Cup taken place in South Africa. While filming the music video for the song in Madrid (Spain), she invited some players such as: Cristiano Ronaldo, Gerard Piqué, Dani Alves, Carlos Kameni, Lionel Messi and Rafael Marquez to join and illustrate for it. She did not expect that this cooperation would change her life.

Among the guests, Gerard Piqué showed a special interest in the singer. After that, Shakira went to South Africa to prepare for her performance at the opening ceremony of the World Cup. In his homeland-Spain, Pique kept thinking about his dream lover and wanted to talk to her but couldn’t find a reason to start. Finally, he asked her about the weather in South Africa.

“It all started when we were in South Africa and I wrote to her. She was already there because she sang in the opening ceremony and I asked her what the weather was like. It is the typical stupid question, and the normal answer is to tell me to bring a jacket,” he told TV3 in 2016. “But she started telling me what the weather was like in every single moment and it got to the point where I told her we would have to get to the World Cup final to see her again—she was singing at the final”, Piqué said.

They kept talking during the tournament and were delighted to find out that they had the same birthday (February 2). Shakira said Pique had told her that his team would win this tournament so he could meet her at the closing ceremony. Pique’s promise indeed came true. In the final, Spain overcame the Netherlands thanks to the only goal in extra time and that was the first world championship of the “red army”.

Shakira made their dating public on Twitter in March 2011. She shared a picture of their clasping hands and wrote: “I’d like to introduce to everyone the sunshine of my life”. The couple gave birth to sons namely Milan and Sasha respectively in 2013 and 2015 and Shakira regularly shares pictures of her spouse and children on social networks. Talking about the reasons for living with Pique for a long time without a wedding, Shakira confided: “When you feel fully happy, you do not need to get married and don’t even think about it. He’s mine anyway”.

Shakira and Pique are still together despite the rumors of their break-up. Her love story is a proof for the special relationship between love and football. “The World Cup has special meaning to many people, including me. I will never forget that I met the love of my life at the World Cup. I never thought I would date a player but it’s so sweet, “said the born-in-1977 singer in an interview.
