22 Oct The Best Songs of Scorpions
Scorpions are a German heavy metal band formed in 1965 in Hanover by Rudolf Schenker.Since the band’s inception, its musical style has ranged from hard rock to heavy metal. The lineup from 1979 to 1992 was the most successful incarnation of the group, and included Klaus Meine (vocals), Rudolf Schenker (rhythm guitar), Matthias Jabs (lead guitar), Francis Buchholz (bass), and Herman Rarebell (drums).
Being called as the “Ambassador of Rock” by MTV channel and described as “The Heroes of heavy metal” by Rolling Stone, Scorpions is not only famous for its strong, passionate hard rock songs but also soft and gentle rock ballads in both rhythm and melody. Let’s review the best songs of Scorpions as below.
“You And I”
Compared to Scorpion’s emotional and hard songs, “You and I” is completely different. This song has a cheerful tune and a fast and vibrant rhythm. The song is like a confession of an inquisitive guy about his love for the girl he secretly falls in. It’s romantic and sweet, isn’t it?
This is one of the Scorpions songs in which the hard rock mixing with ballad melodies is considered to be perfectly connected. The opening part of “Holidays” is a sweet mellow ballad melody that brings listeners a feeling of relaxation while the chorus is a powerful, explosive hard rock melody making the listeners sway to the melody.
“Winds of Change”
This is a song written by the group’s lead singer Klaus Meine after the group’s meeting with Mikhaïl Gorbatchev (the leader of the Soviet Union from 1985 to 1991, who helped ending the Cold War but later contributed to the collapse of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and caused the disintegration of the Soviet Union).
The song is full of history because it talks about the transformation of Eastern Europe after the Cold War. “Wind of Change” has become the epitome of a generation living on either side of the Berlin wall separating East and West Germany.
“Rock You Like a Hurricane”
Considered as Scorpion’s signature song, “Rock You Like a Hurricane” was released as the lead single from their ninth studio album, “Love at First Sting” (1984). It was written by Klaus Meine, Herman Rarebell, Rudolf Schenker and arranged/produced by Dieter Dierks. The lyrics of “Rock You Like a Hurricane” also reference the title of the album on which it originally appeared – Love at First Sting.
Like a hurricane storm, “Rock You Like a Hurricane” broke all boundaries to make the band become the dominant in the rock music market at that time. In 2006, VH1 named “Rock You Like a Hurricane” number 31 on their 40 Greatest Metal Songs and in 2009 it was named the 18th greatest hard rock song of all time also by VH1.If we were to choose 10 songs that defined the various popular music genres of the 1980s’ MTV generation, the Scorpions “Rock You Like A Hurricane,” would be one of them.
“Still Loving You”
“Still Loving You” is a power ballad released in July 1984 as the second single from their ninth studio album, Love at First Sting (1984). The song reached number 64 on Billboard Hot 100.
In an interview with Songfacts, Rudolf Schenker explained, “It’s a story about a love affair, where they recognized it may be over, but let’s try again”
